What do you want to know about Japan?

Wednesday and Thursday of this week, you will be searching the internet to find out all sorts of interesting information about Japan. It is your chance to learn about whatever interests you the most. Maybe you want to know about Japanese food, cars, art, music, sports, history, and on and on. Whatever it is you want to know about you can research today. I want you to look for at least 3 facts, summarize them on an index card (no copy and paste allowed!), and then post it as a comment to the blog.

Here are some sites to get you started:
http://web-japan.org/kidsweb/ (look under LEARN on the left side of the page)
http://www.uni.edu/becker/japanese.html
http://www.kidport.com/RefLib/WorldGeography/Japan/Japan.htm
Finally- http://www.yesnet.yk.ca/schools/wes/webquests_themes/japan_theme/japan_theme.html
(There are links on the right you may want to look at as well.)

If those aren't what you are looking for you can search on Google. Just be sure you are specific in your search and that everything you are looking up is appropriate. I did a search for "Japan for kids" and found all sorts of great stuff, so I know that search will work.

Have fun in your search....

Fugi Speedway

The "track" was established in 1963 and was to be 2.5 miles long. There was supposed to be Nascar races there but wasn't enough money. So Mitsubidhi Estate Co. invested the project in October 1965. After renavations it opened in Decmemeber 1965. It was still kinda dangerous with a bank turn leading in many injuries, and accidients. To many accidients one the "Super Speedway' lead to Forumala leaving the speed way. The track was also used for drag races, and national races.

Japan houses are built by standing up wooden columns on top of flat land or stones. To avoid weater from the ground to get in they raise the floor up several tens of centimeters off the ground. Most of the rooms are covered in mats called tatami. These mats are made of rush grass. They use theses mats because they rarely use chairs.

Rice is a very important food to Japan. A Japanese meal traditionally has some kind of rice, with a main dish of either fish or meat, cooked veggies, soup, and pickled veggies. Japanese people use chopsticks to eat. Today, Japanese people eat foods from many other countries. Like, Europe, North America, and other Asian countries. In many Japanese cities fast-food is very popular. Also, before they eat they say, "itadakimasu". Meaning "I recieve this food". Once they are finished they say,"gochiso sama deshita", which means, "it was quite a feast".

People in Japan celebrate holidays just like we do. The most important holiday they celebrate is New Years. Right before the clock strikes midnight, people ring bells from the temples. There is 108 bells rung all together. Eight are rung for the old year and 100 for the new. Just think how much earsplitting noise that would be! My most favorite information that I found was that children receive money in beautiful decorated envelopes. How cool is that!

Today in Geography class, I learned about Japan and its food.
In Japan the word "meal" is gohan. This is actually referd to rice.
Traditional meals are mostly a serving of plain white rice, along with a dish of fish or meat as the main dish, cooked vegetables as a side dish, and miso soup.
The rice is sticky which is good for eating it with chopsticks.
Cities have many fast-foods restaurants offering hamburgers and fried chicken.
Before eating, Japanese people say "itadakimasu," as a way of saying thank you for making me this food. After eating, say "gochiso sama deshita" to thank that person for making such a good meal.

The massively popular Yu-Gi-Oh series was made in Japan, and it all started with a man named Kazuki Takahashi. As a child he loved art, and had an amazing imagination. It began when he was a teenager going to a high school in Japan where these traits led him to create some mangas. Unfortunetly, though, these beggining mangas were amazing disasters which dissapointed him greatly. All of these failures may have persuaded him to give up, luckily though, his love of video games gave him an idea. That idea was that if a character in a game could be become a heroe than why couldn't a character in a manga series do the same. Keeping this in mind he came up with another idea, Yu-Gi-Oh. After sending his work into the Shonen Jump company where it became an instant success. Well after this main jolt to his career the fan mail came pouring in mostly with questions concerning how to play the game, and where to get it. These questions, which kept appearing, persuaded him to mainly focus on the card game which also became an instant success due to the fact that kids didn't play card games that much, and mainly played video games which were very popular, at least during those times, giving him a wide oppurtunity for his card game. Well, all of these things are some of the factors that led to his successful career as the maker of the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise.

Enviromental pollution has been around since the Meiji period with copper poisoning. This was because of the drainage of the Ashio Copper Mine around 1878. As
Japan modernized enviromental problem increased. Some of the problems were things such as air & water pollution. A conference for the prevention of global warming was held in Kyoto in 1997. Japan
has lessened the amount of waste it produces & recycles used prod-ucts. Along with taking care of its own country, Japan helps other
countries too. I think Japan is a good example of what it takes to take care of the our planet for decades to come.
